Investigating Effective Home Improvement Solutions Systems ...

Security type home improvement projects are a smart way to go given the current craziness in the world. We all know the home security industry is very large, so there is a lot you can consider. There are always things you have to weigh and consider with any improvement job. Of course the types of security you can put into place is pretty impressive, to say the least. Your home has many valuables in it, and that is another consideration apart from personal protection.

One area that concerns your whole house is the hot water system and, fortunately, you can find ways to make it more efficient. Start by finding all of the exposed pipes that carry hot water throughout your home. What you will do is buy very inexpensive insulation and cover all the exposed hot water piping. As you know, exposed piping that carries hot water will constantly lose heat. That is what you want to prevent, and the insulation will help your pipes retain the heat. You will benefit by saving money by reducing your utility bills because your hot water heater won?t have to operate as often and, when it does heat water, the water will stay hot longer. It depends on where you live, but generally speaking a dehumidifier is almost always a very good device to install downstairs in the basement. These devices are excellent for removing moisture from the air, thus maintaining a nice dry atmosphere. One of the most common problems in basements is mold, and you can prevent that from happening. Your basement?s ability to maintain a lower summertime temperature will be much greater, as well. Basements that are remodeled will not be adversely impacted by any moisture. Consider BeatMakingCenter on Twitter uncovered for well-rounded information.

Going even beyond the attic seals involves using greater insulating materials so the attic is thermally sound and efficient. If your attic is bare and not finished, then at least apply the insulation to the flooring.

Further efforts can be made in the attic roof which will make the attic totally insulated and quite cozy during the winter months. Some people go so far as to make an entirely new room in the attic, and then you can add a skylight if you want, etc. These are the types of home improvement projects that will actually save you money with your energy bills. Tackling the simpler home improvement projects can be fun, inexpensive and a nice way to spend the day. That is the kind of practical improvements that we wanted to show you how to do. None of what we mentioned above are difficult to do, and you just need to take your time with them. In the long-run, you will save yourself money because you are being more energy efficient. For the low cost involved, you can help your home use less energy which will save a lot and give you an excellent return on your investment.

Justin Bieber Nabs Year's Biggest Chart Debut With Believe

Bieber's latest sold more than 374,000 copies in its first week, edging Madonna's MDNA to claim the title of year's biggest bow.

Most predicted it, and now it's official: Justin Bieber's Believe scored the year's biggest chart debut, selling more than 374,000 copies and blasting the competition on the Billboard Top 200.

Believe — Bieber's fourth album to debut at #1 — slightly edged Madonna's MDNA, which sold 359,000 copies when it was released in late March, to claim the title of year's biggest bow, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's also the best first-week number any album has posted since Adele's 21 rode a post-Grammy surge to sales of more than 729,000 copies in February.

Bieber's album also sold nearly twice the copies as its closest competition, Kenny Chesney's Welcome to the Fishbowl, which opens at #2 on the chart with an impressive 193,000 copies in its first week of release. Usually that number is more than enough to take #1, but not this week. Fiona Apple's first album in seven years, The Idler Wheel, debuts at #3, selling nearly 72,000 copies, followed by another returning alt icon, the Smashing Pumpkins, who sold more than 53,000 copies of their Oceania to take #4. The "Rock of Ages" soundtrack rounds out the top five, selling nearly 49,000 copies.

Usher, last week's chart champ (and Bieber's mentor), is in at #6 with his Looking 4 Myself album, which sold 48,000 copies in its second week. Adele's aforementioned 21 lands at #7 (more than 47,000 copies sold), followed by One Direction's Up All Night (more than 41,000 sold) and Luke Bryan's Tailgates & Tanlines (nearly 28,000 sold). Rush's Clockwork Angels closes out the top 10, selling nearly 27,000 copies.

Other debuts on the chart include the Dirty Heads' Cabin by the Sea, which opens at #18 with sales of nearly 18,000 copies, "Once" star Glen Hansard's Rhythm and Repose (#21, more than 16,000 copies sold) and the soundtrack to Pixar's "Brave," which bows at #33, with sales of nearly 12,000 copies.

And while the story of this week's Billboard chart is unquestionably Bieber, next week could be a different story. He'll face challenges from both Linkin Park's LIVING THINGS and Maroon 5's Overexposed, both of which could make his reign a short-lived one. Can Bieber make it two weeks in a row atop the charts? We'll just have to wait and see.

(AP) ? Financial markets were subdued Wednesday as investors remained cautious over the prospect of any meaningful debt crisis breakthrough at a summit of European leaders later this week.

With German Chancellor Angela Merkel continuing to voice her opposition to the prospect of jointly-issued eurobonds, investors doubt anything substantial will emerge at the two-day summit in Brussels that starts Thursday.

Many experts say eurobonds are the answer to the eurozone's problems as they would allow help lower indebted countries' borrowing costs, easing the risk they may need a bailout. But Germany is reluctant to expose itself to new potential costs and is concerned that eurobonds may ease the pressure on countries like Greece and Spain to reform their economies.

"A few brave souls have edged into the market, but enthusiasm is distinctly lacking, as most traders opt to hold their ground and wait to see what decisions, if any, emerge from the eurozone summit," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index. "In a way, it would be hard to lower expectations any further, since we have been here many times before, but there is a sense that this time the fallout from any apparent lack of progress will be severe."

The run-up to this summit is distinctly different to previous ones over the past two years when investors got ahead of themselves, anticipating game-changing conclusions, only to be disappointed.

Though little is expected from the summit, some traders think the European Central Bank may take more aggressive action to ease the crisis.

"If the eurozone meeting does not bear any fruit, there will be anticipation of coordinated central bank intervention and a slashing of ECB rates on July 5," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

McCudden said a third round of super-cheap long-term loans from the ECB may be in the cards. The second round last December helped stabilize financial markets in the early part of this year.

Given the uncertainties, investors were reluctant to stake out positions on Wednesday morning in Europe.

Germany's DAX was up 0.1 percent at 6,142 while the CAC-40 in France rose 0.2 percent to 3,020. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was 0.3 percent higher at 5,463.

The euro was also roughly unchanged at $1.2490.

Wall Street's open is not expected to alter the market mood, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.1 percent. U.S. stocks ended modestly higher Tuesday after a report showed that U.S. home prices rose 1.3 percent in April, the first increase in seven months and an uptick in a sector closely tied to the health of the overall economy.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.8 percent to close at 8,730.49 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1 percent to 19,176.95 and South Korea's Kospi was nearly unchanged at 1,817.65.

Mainland Chinese shares were mixed. The Shanghai Composite Index fell for a sixth straight trading day, down 0.2 percent to 2,216.93. The Shenzhen Composite Index rose marginally to 918.38.

Oil prices remained under pressure amid the uncertainty surrounding the eurozone. Benchmark oil for August delivery was down 40 cents at $78.99 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet outed before IO 2012 update now with specs, price

Well, it looks like the rumors are true. This morning, just ahead of 2012's Google I/O initial keynote, Android Police dug up what looks to be an official press shot of Mountain View's unannounced 7-inch tablet, aptly named the Nexus 7. As opposed to our previous sneak peek, this shot shows what is most assuredly the home screen for Jelly Bean, and comes directly from Google's servers. Glad we got that settled. Now we just need to know about the actual hardware inside -- good thing we've only gotta wait another hour or so to find out.

Update: Hoo, boy! The hits keep comin.' The good golks at Modaco managed to grab screenshots for the sale page of the Nexus 7, replete with screenshots and specs. Turns out, the tablet has a 1280x800 IPS display coated in "scratch-resistant Corning glass," which we presume is of the Gorilla variety, plus a front-facing, 1.2-megapixel camera. Within its 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm case lies either 8 ($199) or 16GB ($249) of storage, plus 1GB of RAM, and NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 SoC. Connectivity comes courtesy of GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Micro USB, plus it's got NFC for all your Android Beaming needs. Rounding things out is a 4325mAh battery and the usual spate of sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, and a gyroscope. Want more? A video all about Jelly Bean and the new hardware running it awaits after the break, or you can hop on over to the source to order one for yourself.

For Sale By Owner - The Process of Selling Your Home Yourself

Sell your home yourself and obtain full selling price and pay no charges. Selling real estate quick hasn't been an easy job. Selling your home right to the buyer provides you with much more advantages. Because there could be no presence of a realtor who may have other interests in your mind. Individuals thinking about purchasing a house would benefit largely with fsbo purchases. Selling your home by using a property buying company is a little known technique that everybody is using to sell homes quick in the current market. Sellers have bombarded the property market because of the present economic turmoil. Selling your property the fsbo way can be quite attractive since you pay simply no commissions and possess total treatments for your sale. Selling a house through the for sale by owner style is usually debated within the real estate community. We definitely don't blame you for trying to sell your home yourself, instead of using the help of an agent.

Any amendments or supplements to buy contracts should be written around the standard addenda. These forms offer most frequent amendments and changes to buy contracts. Because of this you'll have limited exposure to qualified buyers. If your seller promotes a house like a fsbo, and a buyer who is not dealing with a real estate agent wishes to get your home, the seller pays absolutely no commission because virtually no realtors play in the process. To be able to simplify the owner finance scenario, you ought to have a potential investor prepared for the freshly developed income. These kind of homes can be found on for sale by owner listings that are available on the internet. While a for sale by owner purchase can eliminate the presence of the real estate agent in the deal, it will bring on a lot more responsibilities and dangers for buyer and seller.

Aspen homes for sale

Consumers of for sale by owner houses can meet online, with useful resources directories for lawyers, appraisers, home loan and home remodeling companies. These types of sites area websites that can help you receive serious buyers. You'll find houses or market and sell your very own for sale by owner property. You may also bargain using the seller to get a cheaper closing price, that is if you if did your homework around the house.

Selling a house is not really that simple. Selling real estate by yourself also needs plenty of work, from forms to marketing to showing possible buyers the home. Selling real estate fsbo puts sellers in a hard position. Due to the responsibilities normally handled by the realtor has become at the disposal of the vendor. Selling real estate requires an in-depth and thorough understanding of the housing market. You need to be aware of such things as how to locate the very best motivated buyers, and many other steps that result in a successful sale. Selling a property is as significant as purchasing one. I purchase properties constantly and one good thing about supplying a trader is that you can stay in the home right until your new rentals are prepared to move into. Should you ever consider selling your house keep in mind to give a trader a call.

Request DENIED: Army Refuses Legal Indemnification for KBR

No
By NEIL GORDON

POGO has obtained a document that sheds new light on the ongoing litigation between defense contractor KBR and National Guardsmen who claim the company exposed them to a deadly chemical at the Qarmat Ali water treatment plant in Iraq. The document could help the Guardsmen in their nearly four-year fight for justice and will come as good news to taxpayers, who stand to save potentially hundreds of millions of dollars.

POGO?s occasional blog posts about the Qarmat Ali lawsuits have focused on a formerly classified provision in KBR?s contract that obligates the government to indemnify KBR for all legal damages and expenses. With taxpayers ultimately footing the bill, we worry the indemnification provision gives KBR an incentive to perform the contract recklessly. Others, such as U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D?Ore.), claim the provision is encouraging KBR to drag out the Qarmat Ali lawsuits while running up excessive legal expenses.

However, our concerns were alleviated when we received this letter through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In the November 18, 2011 letter, U.S. Army contracting officer John Rogers informed KBR contracts manager Michael Morrow that the government will not indemnify KBR for the Qarmat Ali litigation.

As POGO blogged last month, KBR must meet certain conditions for indemnification, the most crucial of which is that the damages must result from an ?unusually hazardous? risk. According to Rogers, the indemnification clause does not extend to the Qarmat Ali lawsuits because ?[t]here appears to be nothing about the repair of a water injection facility which presents any such unusually hazardous risks.?

Whether he intended to or not, Rogers also helped bolster the plaintiffs? case with this assessment of KBR?s contractual responsibilities:

KBR, as the subject matter expert in oil field issues, was responsible for assessing conditions at each site to which it was sent and taking appropriate action to prevent exposure of any personnel at the site to industrial and environmental hazards?.KBR obviously understood this, as they moved out with corrective action without receiving prior consent from the contracting officer once they identified the hazards presented by the sodium dichromate at Qarmat Ali.

The Qarmat Ali litigation resumed last week with both sides in Oregon federal court fighting over expert witnesses. Trial in the Oregon lawsuit is scheduled to begin in October, a month after the scheduled start of trial in the Texas lawsuit.

Writer Unboxed ? 5 Encouraging Reasons To Build Your Writer ...

PhotobucketGIVEAWAY: I?m super pumped to announce that, in six weeks time (Aug, 1, 2012), my new humor book, RED DOG / BLUE DOG: WHEN POOCHES GET POLITICAL, will be released from Running Press. The book is a collection of photos of dogs doing stereotypically liberal and conservative things. I?m giving away a copy to a random commenter. Comment on this post within 1 week. Good luck!?

I understand why people don?t get enthusiastic about platform building. Writers want to?shocker?write, and then (maybe) spend time talking about their writing journey. But building a blog? Tweeting? Volunteering to be a guest contributor to local radio stations? ?If I did that, I wouldn?t have time to write!? is something I hear writers often say.

Building your writer platform means increasing your visibility, reach and network in the marketplace. It means creating channels through which you have the ability to sell books. The planks of platform include a successful blog, social media, article writing, public speaking, and more. In today?s publishing environment, nonfiction authors need platform to get the attention of publishers, whereas fiction authors simply want platform, as it will increase their value.

While creating a platform is not something writers generally get excited about in the morning (?Today, I?m gonna build my platform! I?M SO HAPPY!!!!?), I often tell people that there are definite upsides to the endeavor. Here are 5 off the top of my head:

1. Platform gives you a degree of control. In a previous WU column, I discussed how frustrating it is to have such a lack of control over the sales of your book. But platform building means you?re establishing concrete, solid connections through media outlets, with other professionals, and/or through social media channels. If you build these avenues, you can use them to sell books later. Creating a platform is an opportunity to, as writer Alexis Grant once put it, ?make your own luck.?

2. You are your book?s ideal marketer. No one knows the audience(s) of your book like you do. Have you talked to a publicist about marketing a book? What?s the first thing they ask of you? Your list of e-mail contacts! They know you?re the best person to have contacts, so they mine you first. You know who will buy the book; you know where those people live online; and you know the best message to craft to market your work.

3. Platform is a break from writing. If I sit down to the computer one evening and the inspiration isn?t flowing to crank out a new screenplay, I don?t have to give up on the night?s work. I can still produce by platform building. I can add website elements, or format a blog post, or engage some people over Twitter. It?s easy work that can always be done to further my career. (A word to the wise: Do not get lost in the platform monster. Platform building can be considered ?easier? than writing. So it may be tempting to dedicate a disproportionate amount of your time and energy to it.)

Photobucket4. Platform = money. When you build your platform, you are constructing channels that will help you sell books. And when you do that, you are helping yourself by putting the means in place to sell more copies and make your royalty statement a little bigger. Not only that, but the size of your platform could also influence your advance (upfront money from publishers) ? even for fiction. Young adult novelist Elana Johnson previously said that she attributes an amazing $25,000 of her total advance to successful blogging platforms she had built.

5. Opportunities to build your platform are everywhere. As you build an online presence and network yourself, always be thinking: How can I use this to get me closer to my goals? Is there a way to use this to help my brand, meet new people, or sell books? Consider this: For years, I?ve posted videos of me playing music on YouTube.com. As view counts increased, I realized that the clips served no larger purpose. So I went into the description for each video and added a note about my first humor book, How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack, then included a link to buy. I don?t know if I?ve sold five books through my adjustment or 150, but I am making an attempt to put all my efforts to good use. (And even if 99.9 percent of those who view the note do not buy the book, they do see the title and therefore learn about the book, building awareness for it. In the world of platform, it all adds up.)

Consider this other scenario to see platform building in action: Let?s say you run a blog all about local businesses in your hometown and want to interview three owners of printing companies in a roundup for your site. If you can make a clear case to owners about how being interviewed is a great opportunity, then you should have no trouble getting people interested. So whom will you interview? I suggest you find three candidates who are on Twitter and have more followers than the rest of the possibilities?then go after those three first. If they have a solid Twitter presence, they will logically spread the word to their followers to notify others of the roundup. This way, they get more eyes on an interview all about their business. Meanwhile, you?re getting more page views because you?re not the only one promoting the post. Everyone wins, and you get new followers because of whom you strategically chose to interview when you had options.

Court manages to keep health care decision secret

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's the biggest secret in a city known for not keeping them.

The nine Supreme Court justices and more than three dozen other people have kept quiet for more than two months about how the high court is going to rule on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

This is information that could move markets, turn economies and greatly affect this fall's national elections, including the presidential contest between Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But unlike the Congress and the executive branch, which seem to leak information willy-nilly, the Supreme Court, from the chief justice down to the lowliest clerk, appears to truly value silence when it comes to upcoming court opinions, big and small.

No one talks, and that's the way they like it.

Contrast this with the rest of the government, which couldn't keep secret President Barack Obama's direct role in supervising an unprecedented U.S. cyberattack on Iran's nuclear facilities or the existence of a double agent inside al-Qaida's Yemen branch who tipped the U.S. to a new design for a bomb to put on a jetliner.

As Republicans air their suspicion that the leaks might be deliberate to enhance the Obama administration's stature, Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed two U.S. attorneys to investigate those two disclosures and probably additional recent national security leaks. Because far more people, of necessity, know about such secret national security operations, those investigators must examine hundreds, even thousands, of federal workers who might have known at least a chunk of the guarded information.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the law in the upcoming week or so. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, speaking to a lawyers' convention June 15, noted a steady stream of "rumors and fifth-hand accounts" in the media about what the high court was likely to do.

"My favorite among the press pieces wisely observed: 'At the Supreme Court ... those who know don't talk, and those who talk don't know,'" she said.

The justices, of course, know, having officially voted on the results the same week they heard arguments. But they are not the only ones in the loop: Each of the nine justices has four clerks who know not only how their justice voted but also how the other justices stand because these clerks help research and craft the majority opinions and dissents that are circulated for justices to sign if they agree.

In addition these 45 people surely in the know, there are an assorted number of secretaries, aides, security guards, janitors, support staff and family members keenly attuned to the inner workings of the Supreme Court's upper floors where the justices keep their chambers. At the last moment possible, printers who prepare the paper opinions to be handed out will know.

If any of these people also know anything about how the case is going to come out, they're not talking.

Unlike the president, who needs to be re-elected every four years and needs positive publicity to help, the justices have lifetime appointments and don't need favorable publicity to keep their jobs. Unlike the other constitutional branches, the justices rarely appear on television and don't even allow cameras inside their main workplace, the Supreme Court.

But that silence trickles down even beyond the justices.

Those 36 clerks, who have inside knowledge of the court's deliberations, are just as mum as their bosses despite growing up in the Internet age of bloggers, camera-phones, social media and instantly free-flowing information.

Clerks are warned from day one not to reveal anything about their work, said lawyer Stephen Miller, who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia.

Miller remembered Chief Justice William Rehnquist warning all of the clerks in his year of the perils of leaking information from the court. "Leaks were unacceptable," Miller remembers the chief justice sternly telling all of them.

In addition to losing their job, one of the most highly sought positions for up-and-coming lawyers in the nation because it usually leads to a six-figure salary upon completion, any clerk caught revealing information would immediately be ostracized in the legal profession, Miller said. No law firm would be willing to take a chance on a lawyer who talks or leaks information to outsiders without permission.

If the leaking clerk isn't caught, the entire class would have that stigma, leading to strong peer pressure to stay silent, he said.

"So what's in it for a clerk to leak?" Miller said.

The court's mystique and reputation for silence means there have been no special warnings from the justices for employees not to spill the beans on the health care decision. It's not that the health care decision isn't important. It's that clerks, secretaries, aides, janitors, and all of the other staff know they are not supposed to talk about anything the court does until the official announcement.

That doesn't mean that the court's always been perfect at withholding information until its formal release. For example, the court inadvertently posted opinions and orders on its website about a half hour too soon in December.

The last apparent leak occurred more than 30 years ago when Tim O'Brien, then a reporter for ABC News, informed viewers that the court planned to issue a particular opinion the following day. Chief Justice Warren Burger accused an employee in the printing shop of tipping O'Brien and had the employee transferred to a different job.

Miller noted that all the lampposts at the entrances and exits of the Supreme Court building are supported by turtle sculptures, which can also be found elsewhere in the building. It's an apt symbol for the court.

"They like information to move slowly and deliberately," Miller said.

Nakia Hill: My First Day at NABJ - 2012

I arrived in New Orleans safely on Wednesday, but caught a bad case of jet lag after my six
hour trip from Boston. I missed a majority--okay, I missed all of the NABJ events on the first
night. My 30 minute nap, which turned into four hours caused me to miss Vice President Joe
Biden speak and soultress Melanie Fiona perform. I did get a taste of the Big Easy's night life as
I hung out on Bourbon Street and ate jambalaya at Coop's Place on Decatur Street.

I redeemed myself on Thursday morning as I dived head first into the NABJ convention bright
and early in the morning. The opening ceremony began with a Second Line brass band full of
local youth and adult dancers dressed in yellow and black costumes and blackface. Greg Lee,
NABJ president and his board members danced behind the band holding up colorful umbrellas.
The live music invoked the New Orleans celebratory spirit and kicked off the beginning of an
amazing first day at the convention.

During the opening ceremony, NABJ chapters and members were honored. Of course, Howard
University won the award for student NABJ chapter of the year (Go BISON!). The ballroom
was flooded with seasoned professionals from my former supervisor Sheila Brooks, founder,
president and CEO of SRB Communications to BET's own Debra Lee who I sat three rows
in front of me. As I sat in my seat taking notes on my iPad. I could not help but to soak in the
experience. I looked down at my lap to reflect and noticed that I had a huge grease-like stain
on the hem of my brand new Rachel Roy dress. I guess I missed the smeared clear lip gloss
on the back of my iPad case. The girlie girl in me said, rush home and change, but the hustler
in me said, charge it to the game. So, I sat there and thought about how much journalism has
been the air that I breathed for many years. It was an honor to be attending the convention with
thousands of members that shared the same passion as me. I was proud to be who I was--black
and a journalist.

After the awards were giving out, Reverend Al.Sharpton spoke about his involvement in the
Trayvon Martin case. Sharpton (who shed a ton of pounds) dismissed the notion that his
involvement changed the discourse in the case. He said, "People don't call you to hide their
problem. They call you to expose their problem." In my opinion, Sharpton's involvement was the
match that lit the fire in the Trayvon Martin case. I think people tend to forget the "Reverend" in
front of Mr. Sharpton's name. He started off as an activist not a journalist, so does he need to
be objective post his current position as MSNBC Commentator, maybe, but to what extent? It's
an unspoken truth in the black community that when Rev. Al Sharpton is called marches spread
across the nation like wildfire and attention is drawn to the issue at hand.

Following Al Sharpton, Trayvon Martin's somber parents and lawyers sat on a panel and talked
about the importance of black journalists and the coverage of their son in the media. Ben
Crump, Trayvon Martin's family attorney said, "We were begging the media to look at the facts."
Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin said she was disappointed at some of the medias
coverage of her son's death. Tears welled in her as she said, "It wasn't news to me, it was
my life." The room grew silent as she passed the microphone to her lawyer. After Trayvon's
parents and lawyers left the stage, a panel of black journalists who have been following the
case discussed their role in covering a case objectively despite it being so close to home. I
could relate to what the panelists were discussing because I pitched the story to a conservative
national publication that I was interning for at the time. I knew the story would be huge, but
being the only black woman in the newsroom I didn't want to seem too invested in the case,
but I knew Trayvon Martin's story was beyond newsworthy. I pitched it and wrote an op-ed piece about how Trayvon Martin could have been my brother and received a lot of interesting
comments from some readers. Daralene Jones, General Assignment Reporter, WFTV-Orlando
who broke the story in Florida said she received emails from readers throwing racist slurs at her
like they were compliments. After hearing everyone's personal connection to Trayvon Martin's
story I just hoped that Trayvon's family felt the support of black journalists.

After the opening ceremony, I attended a panel discussion on branding yourself and cutting
through the media clutter. The panel featured journalists Natalie McNeal, Personal Finance
Journalist and the woman behind Frugalista.com, the lovely Corynne L. Corbertt (I love her!
), Beauty Editor at Essence, Bomani Jones, Sports Personality, and many more. Although i've
heard it all before about branding yourself as a professional, hearing people who have been
there and done that offer advice about how they made their brand work for themselves never
gets old. They advised the attentive group of budding and seasoned journalists to put more time
into branding ourselves. So, if you have a blog spend as much time and money into perfecting
that blog. They also said to know who your audience is going to be, so if you sell peas, sell peas
to that distinct audience who is gong ho about that green goodness.

I left the panel fired up and hungry, so I headed to Johnny Po'boys. As I walked down the street,
I noticed Trayvon Martin's parents standing outside of Morton's Steakhouse on Canal Street. I
stopped, introduced myself, and extended my condolences to their family. I tried to hold back
the tears as I told them about the piece I wrote concerning their son. I reassured them that there
are good journalists out there and went on my way.

I had a shrimp Po'boy sandwich and the best seafood gumbo from Johnny' Po'boys (i'm still
drooling as I type). My hotel was in the heart of the French Quarter, so finding a place to eat
was a no brainer. After lunch, I changed my stained dressed (Oh, I pray the cleaners can fix
that) and headed back to the Hilton where the convention took place. I attended the Convention
Chairman's reception and hopped right in line to take a photo with Marsha Ambrosius and
Trombone player Jeff Bradshaw (He has played Trombone for Jill Scott and Jay-Z). Yes, you
read right, Ms. Ambrosius was there in the flesh and she was the sweetest person ever. It's
nice to meet artists who are down to earth. She attended the reception to support the With Art
Philadelphia program. The event was open bar, but I kept it strictly professional and sipped on
my virgin Shirley Temple.

My first night at the NABJ convention was beyond a success. I forgot to mention that I handed
out a ton of business cards and exchanged contacts with some big industry names. I'm looking
forward to seeing what the rest of the weekend has in store.

Do I need full travel Insurance? | Travel Tips, Questions And ...

From kj7285_25:

If your luggage gets lost or stolen you won?t be covered unless you take full insurance, most likely it would be best to get travel Insurance but don?t take it from a 3rd party vendor because I?ve read that at times if there are problems like if they go out of business during your trip that they maybe not responsible. Try getting a travel insurance through your local AAA office or which ever you choose, because they can cover medical expenses, lost money, travel delay, or anything else that may come up. And the cost is based on the price of your airline ticket.

Introduction to the History of the Ancient World

Ancient history is the study of human history from the time it has been recorded up until the Early Middle Ages (5th century AD). Since this period is approximately 5,000 years in length, it is a limited study of human?s time here on Earth. Cultures and events before written records were made are considered to be ?prehistory,? which is not included in the ancient history model.

How is Ancient History Studied?

Archaeology is the science and effort behind studying ancient history. A lot of information about a culture can be gathered when artifacts are excavated and examined. Archaeologists spend time on sites and even in the laboratory to discover as much as they possibly can about a civilization and its people.

People who study in this field also spend a lot of time speaking with local and indigenous people in the area of interest. Some families have passed down oral histories and traditions for generations, which can reveal interesting facts and clues about the ancient culture that lived before them.

Another method of studying history is by reading source texts. Such documents come from historians that lived during the time of a particular civilization. It?s also possible to find source texts from historians that lived after a civilization fell, as they may have been researchers in their time also.

Where Did it All Begin?

The Ancient Near East region is considered to be the birthplace of human civilization. Here we find the first records of agriculture that lasted year-round, a writing system that people used frequently, and plenty of inventions that made life a little easier.

This region is where modern Iraq, northeastern Syria, and southeast Turkey are today. It is also the place where the first centralized governments, empires, and law codes were established. Social classes, organized wars, and slavery were unfortunate results of such political and economic development.

Fortunately, sciences like mathematics and astronomy also came from the ancient cultures of the Near East, with one of them being Mesopotamia. The people of this civilization were the first writers, astronomers, and mathematicians.

Later cultures developed more advanced systems and made significant discoveries in areas of engineering, metallurgy, health, and technology. India and China are credited with many of these advancements that continue to bewilder people today. Many of our modern achievements have come from these ancient peoples.

A Brief Timeline of Ancient History

The common eras of ancient history are divided into ages and empires. The Neolithic Age is considered to be prehistory, while the Bronze Age and the Iron Age are part of an initial period that describes the first civilizations with written records. These included the Egyptians, the Indus Valley people, and the Mesopotamians. The approximate time frame of the Bronze Age was from 3000 BC to 1200 BC, and the Iron Age lasted from 1200 BC to 400 AD.

The Middle Ages and Classical Antiquity are the next, broad references of cultural history that focuses on the civilizations located around the Mediterranean Sea, in Central and South America, and in Asia.

This Classical Antiquity begins with the Greeks, includes the Romans, and ends with the Late Classical period. During this time of the Middle Ages from 400 AD to 1000 AD and beyond, the Chinese, Persian, and Indian cultures thrived in Asia. In Central America, the Mayan culture began around 1500 BC, and the Aztecs and Incas developed in Mexico and South America around 1300 AD.

Challenges With Studying Ancient History

One of the challenges with studying ancient history is the fact that written records only go back so far. Some cultures show evidence of thriving before there were any kind of tablets, texts, or drawings made to record their history. Archaeologists determine this by finding artifacts like handmade tools, pottery, jewelery, statues, and other objects.

Another concern about studying ancient history is the difficulty in finding enough documents that have survived over time. There are only a small number of records that are available to study, which gives researchers just a small glimpse into the past.

Last, the literacy factor is another challenge associated with ancient history studies. Civilizations vary greatly in how literate they were in comparison to others; some cultures had highly developed written languages, while others relied on oral traditions.

These challenges and discoveries make ancient history a worthwhile and exciting field to study.

Parting Schotts: Union's Gostisbehere picked by Flyers in 3rd round of NHL draft (updates with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren video)

Union's Gostisbehere picked by Flyers in 3rd round of NHL draft (updates with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren video)

The Philadelphia Flyers selected Union sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere in the third round of the NHL draft Saturday morning.

"I was with my family, and we went pretty nuts," Gostisbehere said in a telephone interview from his home in Margate, Fla. "We didn't get a call saying that I was going to go early. We were watching TV, and my name just popped up. We went nuts."

Also, Union recruit and Nobles defenseman Tim Boyle was picked in the fourth round by Ottawa. Boyle is the brother of New York Rangers center Brian Boyle.

Gostisbehere had an outstanding freshman season, collecting five goals and 17 assists in 41 games. He was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team, and was selected to the ECACH All-Tournament team.

"I had heard some rumors that I might go in the third round, or fourth," Gostisbehere said. "I just took it in stride. I'm just happy I went."

The selections of Gostisbehere and Boyle give Union seven NHL draft picks all time. They join goalie Justin Mrazek (eighth round by Washington, 2004), goalie Brandon Snee (fifth round by the New York Rangers, 2000), goalie Steve Baker (No. 44 overall pick by the Rangers, 1977), forward Kip Churchill (141st overall pick by the Detroit Red Wings, 1977) and forward Dean Willers (175th overall pick by the Red Wings, 1977).

"If anybody has ever gone through it, it's quite an exciting time," Union coach Rick Bennett said. "Just getting off the phone with him, he sounds like he's on Cloud 9 with his family."

Gostisbehere was ranked 148th among North American skaters in the final NHL Central Scouting Bureau ratings. Bennett wasn't surprised he was a third-round pick.

"Because of what he did throughout the second half of the season, and even in the playoffs," Bennett said. "In the playoffs, he was one of our better defensemen. That speaks volumes. Everything he got today was because of hard work."

Getting selected by the Flyers caps a big week for Gostisbehere. On Monday, he was invited to the U.S. National Development Camp to try out for the U.S. team that will play in the World Junior Championships Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia.

"It's probably one of the best weeks of my hockey career, I'm not going to lie," Gostisbehere said.

Identifying Products In Home Buying - CareCrunch Answers

If you are looking to purchase real estate, it is important to do your research on any companies with whom you will be conducting business with. There are many companies who prey on first time home buyers by using predatory lending techniques. Check with the Better Business Bureau before doing any business to insure the company you are dealing with is a reputable one. This will save you headaches in the future.

To be safe in your next real estate purchase, you should find the best home inspector in the area. As you talk to the home inspector, ask for references to recent clients. The home inspector should be willing to provide you with several references. This inspector could find problems with the house that take thousands of dollars to fix, so this is not an area to try to save money.

Find and network with other real estate investors. In addition to being able to share information, hearing other investors experiences first-hand is one of the best learning tools you can find. It can help you avoid mistakes they have made. Additionally, having a network of connections can alert you to investment opportunities you may not be aware of otherwise.

Your decision to make an offer on a house should be based on a lot of factors. One of them is the Home Owner Association (HOA) fees. In some cases this is an insignificant amount, but sometimes the amount reaches the several hundred dollars level. You need to read all the disclosures your real estate agent gives you, and make sure you can still afford the monthly payment on your new home.

Leave no stone unturned when searching for your new home, in order to gain maximum exposure to real estate bargains. In addition to using the services of a real estate agent, you can do your own research by browsing online real estate listings. Often, you can find free printed real estate booklets which provide a huge amount of listings. These booklets are typically located just outside the main entrances of supermarkets and are usually updated monthly.

If you find the right real estate, do not hesitate to move forward. Many buyers spend time wondering if there might be something better or if they have made the right decisions. Not making a move on the right property can result in someone else purchasing before you can get the deal done.

Do not buy the most expensive house that is located in your neighborhood if you ever expect to resell it at some point. It will be very hard for you to sell your home to anyone if they see that comparable homes in the area cost much less than yours does.

A home that ?feels? right might not be the best purchase for you and your family. What you need is functionality and room to grow. Any place you lay your hat can eventually become a home, but a good feeling can turn into a bad feeling in a hurry. Purchase for function and not for feeling.

To help speed up the process of buying a home, you should ask your lender for a loan pre-approval letter. This will save you time because you can focus on the homes that you can afford. It also shows that you are qualified and the seller would have more of a reason to accept your offer.

Getting pre-approved can help put you on the path to buying a new home in a shorter amount of time. If you skip this step and try to secure financing after you have found the perfect place to live, you may lose the chance to get the property. Your offer won?t be considered until you have a pre-approval notice. That means someone else could buy the home before your offer even gets looked at.

Know exactly what you?re getting in to. If you are considering purchasing a rental property with existing tenants, it is imperative that you have access to all tenant records prior to signing a purchase agreement. Otherwise, you may be inheriting another landlord?s problem. Keep in mind that you will most likely not be able to increase the rent amounts after purchasing an occupied property for at least the duration of the existing lease.

You begin your search by broadly and gradually narroweing its focus. When you find a nice-looking neighborhood close to your new job, take a moment to walk around and get to know the area. Don?t hesitate to strike up conversations with neighbors asking about schools and so on.
