A way to reduce electrons' effective mass to nearly 0

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

The field of metamaterials involves augmenting materials with specially designed patterns, enabling those materials to manipulate electromagnetic waves and fields in previously impossible ways. Now, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have come up with a theory for moving this phenomenon onto the quantum scale, laying out blueprints for materials where electrons have nearly zero effective mass.

Such materials could make for faster circuits with novel properties.

The work was conducted by Nader Engheta, the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Mario G. Silveirinha, who was a visiting scholar at the Engineering School when their collaboration began. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Their paper was published in the journal Physical Review B: Rapid Communications.

Their idea was born out of the similarities and analogies between the mathematics that govern electromagnetic waves ? Maxwell's Equations ? and those that govern the quantum mechanics of electrons ? Schr?dinger's Equations.

On the electromagnetic side, inspiration came from work the two researchers had done on metamaterials that manipulate permittivity, a trait of materials related to their reaction to electric fields. They theorized that, by alternating between thin layers of materials with positive and negative permittivity, they could construct a bulk metamaterial with an effective permittivity at or near zero. Critically, this property is only achieved when an electromagnetic wave passes through the layers head on, against the grain of the stack. This directional dependence, known as anisotropy, has practical applications.

The researchers saw parallels between this phenomenon and the electron transport behavior demonstrated in Leo Esaki's Nobel Prize-winning work on superlattices in the 1970s: semiconductors constructed out of alternating layers of materials, much like the permittivity-altering metamaterial.

A semiconductor's qualities stem from the lattice-like pattern its constituent atoms are arranged in; an electron must navigate the electric potentials of all of these atoms, moving faster or slower depending on how directly it can pass by them. Esaki and his colleagues showed that, by making a superlattice out of layers of different materials, they could produce a composite material that had different electron transport properties than either of the components.

Though the actual mass of electrons is fixed, Engheta and Silveirinha thought the same principle could be applied to the effective mass of the electron. Engineers have been tailoring materials to alter the effective mass of electrons for decades; existing semiconductors that give electrons a negative effective mass were a prerequisite for the team's new theory.

"Imagine you have a ball inside a fluid," Engheta said. "You can calculate how fast the ball falls as a combination of the force of gravity and the reaction of the fluid, or you can say that the ball has an effectively different mass in the fluid than it does normally. The effective mass can even be negative, which we see in the case of a bubble. The bubble looks like it has negative mass, because it's moving against gravity, but it is really the fluid moving down around it."

Like the optical metamaterial with alternating bands of positive and negative permittivity, Engheta and Silveirinha theorized, a material with alternating bands of positive and negative effective electron mass would allow the overall structure's effective electron mass to approach zero.

And like the optical metamaterial, the electron's effective mass in this case would be anisotropic. While travelling against the grain of the alternating materials, its effective mass would be near-zero, and thus it would travel very fast. But trying to move the electron along the grain would result in a very high effective mass, making it very difficult for it to move at all. "In the direction the electrons are collimated, we see an effective mass of zero," Engheta said. "This is like what we see with graphene, where electrons have an effective mass of zero but only along its plane.

"But a plane of graphene is only one atom thick, whereas here we would see that property in a bulk material. It's essentially like the material has wires running through it, even though there is no wire surface."

As with graphene, the properties of this composite material would be dependent on structure at the smallest scale; a few stray atoms could significantly degrade the material's overall performance. A single uniform layer of atoms is ideal in both cases, and, while deposition techniques are improving, working at the scale of a few nanometers still represents a physical challenge. The team hopes to address this challenge in future studies.

"While physics prevents us from having infinite velocity, having materials that give electrons near-zero effective mass will let us move them much faster," Engheta said.

No Evidence Exercise Plays Role In Detoxification, Health Experts Say

* Yoga advocates say moves improve circulation, aid detox
* Others say liver and kidneys detoxify the body
By Dorene Internicola
NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - The word "detoxification" is flung around the fitness community as frequently as kettlebells are swung.
Yoga teachers regularly speak of detoxifying twists, aerobics instructors of detoxifying sweat, dieters of detoxifying fasts. But health professionals are skeptical.
"If you start talking about exercising to detoxify, there's no scientific data," said Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin, chief of women's sports medicine at Harvard Medical School. "The human body is designed to get rid of what we don't need."
The same applies to fasting.
"No good scientific data supports any of those cleanses, where you drink juice, or (only) water for a week," she said.
Exercise is important, Matzkin added, because it enables our body to do what it is made to do, but the kidneys and colon get rid of waste. The role of exercise in that process is unclear.
"In general exercise helps our lungs; kidneys get rid of things that can cause us onset of disease," she said.
A healthy lifestyle - eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and exercising - is important to detoxifying because it enables our body to do what is intended to do.
"As for specific yoga moves, I'm not so sure," she said.
Yoga instructor and fitness expert Shirley Archer, an author and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) said the theory behind the effectiveness of detoxifying twists in yoga is that they squeeze the organs, which push the blood out so fresh blood can rush in.
"Better circulation equals better health," said Archer, who is based in Florida. "If detox means to eliminate from the body what it no longer needs, then certain yogic practices can help."
She said yogic deep breathing with strong exhalations can empty the lungs of unneeded carbon dioxide and allow for a fresh breath of more oxygenated air. "This nourishes all of our cells," she said. "It is also a method of cleansing because better circulation equals better health."
Meditative movement practices, such as yoga and tai chi, she added, can detox your attitude because they require staying in the present moment and discourage dwelling on the past.
Last summer, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson began taking groups of 40-odd women on what she calls Detox Weeks, which involve at least three hours of workouts each day, as well as lectures on fitness and nutrition aimed mainly at encouraging lifestyle changes.
Similar weeks in other cities are planned for 2013.
"Women work out and think 'Why can't my love handles, muffin tops go away'?" said Anderson, creator of the Tracy Anderson Method and a co-owner, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, of fitness centers in Los Angeles and New York. "The most important thing is if you can become a consistent exerciser."
"A good workout is not five to 10 yoga poses," she explained. "You have to learn to scale up your endurance. If you can only jump for five minutes straight, we'll go to 10 minutes, then 20 minutes."
Anderson said she uses the term detoxification broadly to include everything from working up a good sweat to clearing the mind of destructive thoughts.
"Detoxification is a big topic," she said.
Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian in Boston, Massachusetts and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, said the body generally does a fine job of detoxifying itself through the liver and kidneys. Sweating has nothing to do with it.
"When you sweat you really don't detoxify anything," she explained. "If someone goes on a crash diet, then maybe toxins are released but then the body would take care of them. When you sweat you lose sodium." (Editing by Patricia Reaney and Todd Eastham)

Sally Roberts continues to oppose further treatment for her son Neon's cancer at High Court as doctor warns seven-year-old 'could die soon'

  • High Court rules Neon Roberts needs surgery on brain tumour
  • His mother tells court she does not consent to the operation
  • Doctors tell court that he would inevitably die if untreated

The boy snatched by his mother to save him from the ordeal of cancer treatment will have brain surgery today against her wishes.

A judge ordered yesterday that seven-year-old Neon Roberts must be operated on ?as soon as possible?.

A doctor told the court that without treatment it was highly likely the child would die ?after a relatively short period of time?.

But Sally Roberts has refused to give her consent because she does not trust British doctors and fears her son will suffer long-term side effects from treatment.

Mrs Roberts, 37, wants to seek second opinions from abroad and argued it is her ?human right? to decide what is best for Neon.

But in the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Bodey said: ?We do not have the luxury of time. I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

Last night Neon was given his Christmas presents early before being taken to hospital.

He was diagnosed two months ago with a medulloblastoma tumour, which doctors believed they had removed in full during a nine-hour operation on October 25.

But Mrs Roberts refused to let her son receive radiotherapy following the first operation, and recent MRI scans picked up a growth of 1.5cm squared ? either regrowth or residual tumour.

Her estranged husband Ben, 34, wrote a statement to the judge saying he was in support of surgery and is said to be ?anxious? it is performed as soon as possible.

After yesterday?s verdict, Mrs Roberts, who triggered a national search when she went on the run with her son two weeks ago, said she understood why the judge made the ruling, but added: ?Should this be my decision as his mother? Of course it should be. It is a human rights issue.

?I?m not keeping this case going, spending taxpayers? money, for nothing. I believe in this. Death by doctor ? people need to understand how big a problem it is. I couldn?t forgive myself if I did nothing.?

The operation carries a risk of between 10 and 25 per cent that Neon will be left mute. But despite experts unanimously reporting that his cancer has returned and warning that he may have only two or three months to live without treatment, Mrs Roberts said she believed doctors were over-emphasising how ?sick? he is.

?Everyone is talking of me depriving him of treatment, saying my son is going to die. It is simply not true but everyone believes it,? she added.

?He?s running about, wanting to play. But the surgery will take it out of him. The operation will affect his movement, balance, his speech. It can sometimes cause the cancer to spread.?

She insisted that she was not fighting simply on mother?s intuition, saying: ?This is not something I just think. This is something I know. I have researched this.?

She said her estranged husband opposed her actions because he had not done enough research on the subject. Mrs Roberts, who wants Neon to be treated with alternative medicine such as oxygen therapy, insisted ?death by doctor? was a ?bigger problem than terrorism?.

She argued that the only evidence cited in court in favour of radiotherapy was a study on a small number of infants from the 1940s, and claimed to have found studies from abroad which prove radiotherapy is often unnecessary. A doctor in court said he was not familiar with the research.

Mrs Roberts dismissed her legal team minutes before court yesterday because she did not believe they had enough faith in her case. She has since hired renowned human rights lawyer Imran Khan, best known for representing the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

The mother-of-two, who is originally from New Zealand, had asked the court to postpone a decision on surgery until she could seek second opinions from Russia, Germany, China and the United States.

She had earlier consented to the operation but changed her mind on the morning of yesterday?s hearing, and said she believes the growth spotted on recent MRI scans could be scar tissue.

Doctors treating Neon, however, claim he has already been ?disadvantaged? by the delays in his treatment. Mr Justice Bodey said he had sympathy with Mrs Roberts, but added: ?Putting all those risks in the balance?.?.?.?in the unhappy position [Neon] now finds himself, I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

After spending today in hospital with Neon, Mrs Roberts will tomorrow return to the High Court to try to prevent her son being given radiotherapy in January.

Bitcasa brings ?infinite? cloud storage to Android & Win 8 with new apps, iOS coming soon

Cloud storage startup Bitcasa has released new mobile apps for Android and Windows 8 platforms, with iOS and Mac apps coming in January, the company announced Tuesday morning.

Bitcasa offers a back-up solution that?s a bit different from peers such Dropbox, SugarSync, and Google Drive. Essentially, Bitcasa can back up all of your data and files on Bitcasa?s servers and you can even move things to the cloud that you can delete on your personal hard drive. The service?s interface makes accessing your files as easy as tapping an external hard drive. It costs $10 a month, a pretty reasonable price for what it claims is ?infinite storage.?

Bitcasa and its new apps promise the following benefits:

Instant Streaming, Access Anywhere: With Bitcasa, users can play whole music albums, watch videos in various formats, view and share photo albums, and read documents from anywhere. Instant streaming from the Bitcasa Infinite Drive allows users to stream their personal jukebox of music, videos, and photos to mobile and desktop devices without having to sync or store files locally on each of your devices.

Bitcasa AndroidInfinite Storage: The Infinite Drive acts as a virtual external drive that expands with the user?s growing storage needs without ever worrying about running out of space again.

Safe Backup: Continuous and automatic backup gives peace of mind. Users can mirror their content from all their computers to Bitcasa, and access it anywhere. All files and backups are protected with client-side encryption, which means that only users can see and access their data. Users can easily retrieve files with time-capsule versioning by date.

Share Content: With one click, users can share any file or folder with their friends and family ? Bitcasa or non-Bitcasa users ? regardless of file size. For sharing on mobile devices, users can also set up alerts to protect against large downloads that might affect their mobile bandwidth charges.

Get Organized: Bitcasa automatically categorizes users? data into Music, Photos, Videos, and Documents. Users no longer have to worry about managing and organizing their files ? the same way they do not have to worry about storage capacity limits.

Bitcasa CEO Tony Gauda strongly believes in the power of mobile and one of the things he wanted to accomplish was making it easier to tap your files no matter where you are.

?With our mobile app releases, we are now making all of your data easily available from mobile and PC/Mac clients while taking the security of that data very seriously,? Gauda said in a statement. ?By announcing our cross-platform support today, we are offering our global users secure access on all computers, mobile devices, or Web browsers by streaming from the cloud while allowing them to keep the data they access more often localized on their hard drive.?

You can download the new apps from Bitcasa?s download page.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Bitcasa launched in Sept. 2011. The company has raised $9 million in funding from Pelion Venture Partners, Horizons Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, CrunchFund, and Samsung Ventures.

Gun control debate begins to simmer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats say meaningful action in the wake of last week's elementary school shooting must include a ban on military-style assault weapons as well as a look at how the nation deals with individuals suffering from serious mental illness.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she will introduce legislation next year to ban new assault weapons, as well as big clips, drums and strips of more than 10 bullets.

And New York Sen. Chuck Schumer says the nation may be at "a tipping point where we might actually get something done."

President Barack Obama didn't bring up gun control when he spoke Sunday at a vigil in Newtown, Conn., the site of Friday's massacre. But he vowed to "use whatever power" his office holds to prevent another such tragedy.

Hugh Grant: I deserved 'kicking' from Stewart

Leon Neal / AFP - Getty Images

By Peter Gicas, E! Online

Hugh Grant clearly heard about what Jon Stewart had to say about him. In the wake of the "Daily Show" host noting he would "never" welcome him back to his program while recalling a 2009 appearance by the actor, Grant has taken to Twitter to humbly acknowledge it.

"Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in 09," the Cloud Atlas star tweeted on Thursday. "Unforgivable. J Stewart correct to give me kicking."

Jon Stewart will "never" welcome Hugh Grant back to "The Daily Show"

While chatting with Stephen Colbert as part of a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey on Friday, Dec. 7, Stewart was asked who his least-favorite guest had been and immediately replied with Grant.?

"He's giving everyone s--- the whole time, and he's a big pain in the a--," Stewart said regarding Grant's appearance to promote the movie "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" "And we've had dictators on the show."

Check out the top 10 feuds of 2012

Guess time will tell if Stewart will change his "never" to "maybe" when it comes to Grant.

Nanocrystals not small enough to avoid defects

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Nanocrystals as protective coatings for advanced gas turbine and jet engines are receiving a lot of attention for their many advantageous mechanical properties, including their resistance to stress. However, contrary to computer simulations, the tiny size of nanocrystals apparently does not safeguard them from defects.

In a study by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)and collaborators from multiple institutions, nanocrystals of nickel subjected to high pressure continued to suffer dislocation-mediated plastic deformation even when the crystals were only three nanometers in size. These experimental findings, which were carried out at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS), a premier source of X-rays and ultraviolet light for scientific research, show that dislocations can form in the finest of nanocrystals when stress is applied.

"We cannot ignore or underestimate the role of dislocations -- defects or irregularities -- in fine nanocrystals as external stress can change the entire picture," says Bin Chen, a materials scientist with the ALS Experimental Systems Group who led this research. "Our results demonstrate that dislocation-mediated deformation persists to smaller crystal sizes than anticipated, primarily because computer models have not given enough consideration to the effects of external stress and grain boundaries."

Chen is the lead and corresponding author of a paper in Science describing this work. The paper is titled "Texture of Nanocrystalline Nickel: Probing the Lower Size Limit of Dislocation Activity." Co-authoring this paper were Katie Lutker, Selva Vennila Raju, Jinyuan Yan, Waruntorn Kanitpanyacharoen, Jialin Lei, Shizhong Yang, Hans-Rudolf Wenk, Ho-kwang Mao and Quentin Williams.

Plastic deformation is a permanent change in the shape or size of a material as the result of an applied stress. The likelihood of plastic deformation increases with the presence of dislocations -- defects or irregularities -- within the material's structure. Most materials are made up of small crystals, called "grains," and what happens at the boundaries between these grains is critical to material properties. Based on computer simulations and electron microscopy analysis, the belief has been that dislocation-mediated plastic deformation becomes inactive below a grain size of at least 10 nanometers, and possibly as large as 30 nanometers.

"The idea was that below a critical length scale, dislocation-mediated deformation activity would give way to grain-boundary sliding, diffusion, and grain rotation," Chen says. "However, there were many unresolved questions with regards to whether plasticity in ultrafine nanocrystalline grains could still be generated by dislocations and how pressure might affect the deformational regimes."

To investigate grain size and pressure effects on the plastic deformation of nanometals, Chen and his colleagues used ALS Beamline 12.2.2, a superconducting bend magnet beamline that supports radial diamond-anvil-cell X-ray diffraction experiments. Chen and his co-authors recorded in situ observations under a range of high pressures of texturing (when the crystalline grains have preferred orientations) in stressed polycrystalline nickel samples featuring grain sizes of 500-, 20- and 3-nanometers.

"Substantial texturing was observed at pressures above 3.0 gigapascals for nickel with 500-nanometer grain size and at greater than 11.0 gigapascals for nickel with 20-nanometer grain size," Chen says. "Surprisingly, texturing was also seen in nickel with 3-nanometer grain size when compressed above 18.5 gigapascals. This tells us that under high external pressures, dislocation activity can be extended down to a few-nanometers-length scale."

Chen and his co-authors started with nanocrystalline nickel because its face-center cubic structure remains stable under a wide pressure range. They are now applying their techniques to the study of other nanocrystalline materials, both metals and non-metals.

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA and the DOE Office of Science. The ALS is a DOE Office of Science national user facility.

A New Way of Fighting Childhood Obesity ? Through Social Media ...

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has more then tripled in the past 30 years. In 2008 nearly 20 percent of children in the U.S. between the ages of 6 and 11 were categorized as overweight. Eighteen percent were categorized as obese between the ages of 12 and 19 ? a major problem.

social media helping fight childhood obesityThe American Heart Association, though, recently said that online communication and social media can promote healthy behavioral changes to young people who are dealing with these issues.

Many studies now suggest that there is a much greater success rate in battling this issue beyond traditional methods ? such increased parental involvement and more interaction with counselors ? and using online intervention and exposure.

About 95 percent of 12- to 17-year-old children have Internet access at home and/or in school. With this type of access, many experts believe online social network health interventions can be an effective way to prevent or manage excessive weight. The theory is that people with similar traits stick together, both online and in the real world. They can also be influenced by their peers. If one person starts making healthy lifestyle changes, there?s a good chance others will be influenced to do so, too. Just like all social media, the viral factor can play a huge part on making things happen quickly.

>> it is not yet clear. the united states did not say it will provide arms. it opens the door wider and the u.s. is coming late to this party. a number of other allies of the united states have given recognition and giving them arms and assistance. the u.s. is among the last reported stamp of approval.

>> what are do you think the approval was meat at this point? part the united states has had concern fist are a long time that among the many groups, some have close ties to al qaeda and the obama administration didn't want to give the recognition to that particular group. in recent days, they have identified one group and put that down on the terror list and to all the other groups, we put them down as terrorists. we are happy to have the rest of you as long as you keep them out of the picture. some of the other countries that have given the syrian rebels as a larger umbrella. they are not making that distinction. it's a bit of a fine legalistic point.

>> we're know the importance of needing to make that. it is linked as an affiliate of al qaeda that the president feels are a representation of the syrian people .

>> about a month ago, they got the rebels together and said listen. they had lots of political differences and the united states essentially said you have to get your act together. come to an agreement and a month later that is happening in morocco. the u.s. and the obama administration feels comfortable saying we are with you guys.

>> what about the news we just got that the officials have confirmed for the first time and the military using scud missiles directed at the rebel fighters. is this the last act of desperation?

>> it feels that way. he started by using ground troops and tanks and helicopters and jets. now scud missiles . that's the last weapon. short of chemical weapons , we we hope he doesn't go there. he is feeling the news come around and has been a lot of fighting for several weeks in and around damascus in his capital. he can hear the gunfire from the windows of his palace.

>> thank you very much, bobby

About Mental Health: How Fitness Affects Mental Health

Mental health is just as importance as physical fitness. The World Health Organization estimates that, globally, 154 million people suffer from depression and mental health illnesses. Exercise has long been described as a natural ?high?.? This is because undertaking some activity can make a huge difference to a person?s mental health. Many studies and clinical trials have shown that being more active provides particular benefits including:?Improved mood, reducing symptoms of stress, anger and depression, alleviating anxiety and reducing cognitive decline.

The High

The ?high? that is described by many, is partially due to the release of endorphins when your body is active.? These are hormones that give us a feeling of happiness and reward.? They have also been shown to improve a person?s mood.? While the ?high? has traditionally been associated with running, walkers too have reported a ?high? after walking. Some suggest that this is increased with a walk of sixty minutes or more.

Aside from the release of ?happy hormones?, maintaining fitness also has long-term benefits for mental health.? Generally, regular exercise reduces one?s risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and some cancers.? So physiologically speaking, the human body is functioning better when it is fitter than it would if one led a sedentary life.?

Increase of Neutrophils and Monoamines
Exercise results in an increase of neutrophils and monoamines. Neutrophils are white blood cells that assist the immune system and monoamines are neurotransmitters.? These are both linked to reducing symptoms of depression and mental health illnesses. The challenge in using exercise or physical activity as a medicine for mental health is that generally compliance with being active is quite low, as 10-20% of people in general are regularly active.

One study in the UK showed that taking upwards of 12,500 walking steps each day over approximately 100-days, as measured by using a pedometer, significantly improved mental health. Another study in Australia showed that people who took part in a walking program for approximately 100-days showed significant improvements in their 'Quality of Life'. Taken together these studies show that the duration of ?activity?, whether it be structured or incidental can play a very significant role in improving ones mental health. Further the intensity of activity was not high, however did include taking the stairs at work, walking a little further before work by getting off transport one stop earlier and gentle walking during lunch breaks.

So by being more active and even exercising and being fitter, you are not only helping your body but also your mind.?

Private spaceship builders split $30M from NASA

NASA has awarded $30 million to help three private companies ensure that their astronaut taxis are safe and reliable, agency officials announced Monday.

Boeing, SpaceX and Sierra Nevada Corp. will each receive about $10 million to begin certifying that their respective private spaceflight systems meet NASA requirements for ferrying crews to and from the International Space Station. A second and final contract in this process ? which is known as the certification products contracts, or CPC ? will be awarded in the future, agency officials said.

"I congratulate the three companies for their selection," Ed Mango, Commercial Crew Program manager at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, said in a statement. "This is the program's first major, fixed-price contract. The effort will bring space system designs within NASA's safety and performance expectations for future flights to the International Space Station."

Colorado-based Sierra Nevada got an even $10 million to continue work on its Dream Chaser space plane. Texas-based Boeing got $9.99 million for its CST-100 capsule, while SpaceX (headquartered in Hawthorne, Calif.) received $9.59 million to keep upgrading its unmanned Dragon capsule to carry crew. [ Now Boarding: The Top 10 Private Spaceships ]

NASA hopes at least one of these vehicles will be ready to carry astronauts to low-Earth orbit by 2017. The United States has lacked a homegrown manned capability since NASA's space shuttle fleet retired in July 2011; it currently relies on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to do the job.

"These contracts represent important progress in restoring human spaceflight capabilities to the United States," Phil McAlister, director of NASA's Commercial Spaceflight Development Division, said in a statement. "NASA and its industry partners are committed to the goal of safely and cost-effectively launching astronauts from home within the next five years."

The CPC Phase 1 contracts run from Jan. 22, 2013 through May 30, 2014, NASA officials said. During this period, the three companies will work with the Commercial Crew Program to draw up certification plans. These plans will implement NASA's safety and performance requirements across all aspects of the transportation system, from the spacecraft to the launch vehicle and ground operations.

CPC Phase 2, which is expected to begin in mid-2014, will include the final development and verifications necessary to allow manned test flights to the space station. This second contract phase will involve a full and open competition, officials said.

The newly announced $30 million is just the latest in a series of commercial crew awards granted by NASA over the last few years. In 2010, the agency granted a total of $50 million to five companies, including Boeing and Sierra Nevada. Boeing, Sierra Nevada and SpaceX split $315 million in 2011 and $1.1 billion in another round of awards announced this past August.

Screen Shot 2012-12-09 at 2.54.55 PMIt's Rumor Sunday!? again here at TechCrunch. We have been hearing a recurring report, from a couple of different sources, that Apple has been interested in buying Snapguide -- the web and mobile app that lets people create and share do-it-yourself guides for things like crafty holiday gifts, cooking, and teaching your dog to play the piano. Before we go any further with the details, we should let you know that Daniel Raffel, the co-founder of Snapguide, has been very clear that the startup, which has to date raised $7 million from a mix of VCs and angel investors including Index Ventures, Atlas Venture, CrunchFund, SV Angel and Dave Morin, is not engaged in any formal negotiations with Apple.

How To Find Affordable Caribbean Cruises | travel and leisure ...

Going on a cruise to the Caribbean used to be something that only rich people can do. This is not the case nowadays, not when there are several things you can do to find easy to afford Caribbean Cruises. So if you do not have much of a budget, there is no reason you cannot enjoy a cruise vacation with your friends or family.

Determining how much you can afford to spend on the cruise vacation is the first thing to do to save money. Setting a price range will help you avoid spending more than you can afford on cruise packages apart from helping you save time since you get to narrow down your options. So before you look into what cruise vacations are available, take the time to study your finances carefully to be sure you can pay for this trip.

When you book your cruise vacations will also affect how much you will pay for it. If you have never tried booking for cruise vacations before, it is important to understand that booking cruise vacations is different from buying airline tickets or reserving hotel rooms. If you want to save money on your Mediterranean Cruises, you need to wait until a few weeks before the ship departs.

The longer you wait to book tickets to these cruise ships, the more money you save which is the opposite of what you'll do if you're booking airline tickets and hotels. The best time to start arranging for cruise vacations if you want to save money is about twelve to eight weeks before the ship leaves. The reason is simple: cruise lines would prefer to offer discounted prices than have their cruise ships sail for several days with several empty cabins.

One other way to save money when you are booking cruise vacations is to arrange for the trip online. This is because websites such as CheapCruises provide all the information you need. There is no need to go from one travel agency to another and talk to different travel agents which can add to the confusion of booking cruise vacations.

It is also easy to find affordable deals online since you are able to visit several websites at a time. This allows you to compare several cruise vacations from each other until you find one that will suit your budget. So take the time to go over all available options before you decide on a cruise vacation. There is absolutely no need to spend a fortune even on cruise vacations, not when there are a number of things you can do to save money.

TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! ANTI-CRIME ACTIVIST ...

Here's an important look at rhetorical diversity and differing approaches to curbing gun violence in Kansas City this afternoon.

By now, we're all familiar with the fact that Kansas City sports columnist Jason Whitlock recently exclaimed that "The NRA Is The New KKK"

Anti-gun talk following the tragedy was bold but maybe not that constructive in creating real change.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY ANTI-CRIME ACTIVIST ALONZO WASHINGTON HAS RECENTLY JOINED THE NRA AND TOUTS HIS VISION AND WORK FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP IN THE URBAN CORE!!!

As usual, Mr. Washington's straight forward approach to a complex issue reveals his dedication to the constant fight to curb violence on local streets.

Check the presser . . .

Anti-Crime Activist joins the NRA to encourage gun related manufactures and organizations to support gun violence prevention efforts in the Kansas City area and beyond.

Kansas City's most outspoken activist against crime & gun violence is now a member of the NRA. Alonzo Washington has been battling the social ills of gun violence for over 4 decades in the greater Kansas City area. He has constantly obtained tips that have been successful in helping law enforcement agencies all over the metro solve a number of high profile and low profile murder cases.

The recent murder suicide case regarding Kansas City Chiefs football player Javon Belcher has put the issues of gun control and violence in the national spotlight. In response to this one noted sports columnist compared the NRA to the Klu Klux Klan. Most people view the gun issue as a black or white issue. One group of people want them banned and another group of people want them open for public consumption. Alonzo Washington believes that the answer to this plight is somewhere between these two perspectives.

For four years Alonzo Washington has operated a special youth program called 3-Gun For Peace. This program is designed to introduce at risk youth to the shooting sports and turn them away from crime and violence. The slogan for the program is "Shoot targets and not each other". The program introduces young people to the legal ways to participate in the shooting sports and how to avoid the world of illegal guns & crime. The course focuses on gun safety, conflict resolution and critical thinking skills. Students in the program take field trips to various shooting ranges and homicides scenes. The number one question in all of the sites visits to crime scenes is how could the murder at that scene could have been prevented? Students are expected to come up with ways that the murder could have been avoided.

To date the program has received sponsorships from the Kansas Rifle Association, Glock, Cabelas, Crimson Trace, Crossbreed Holsters and others. Alonzo Washington has joined the National Rifle Association in order to get more firearms companies and organizations to support efforts to fight and prevent gun violence. Mr. Washington believes that companies that produce guns and make enormous profits from them should be on the front lines of helping society find solutions to the spate of gun violence that oppresses communities all over America. Next year Alonzo Washington plans to take a group of urban youth to the NRA Convention in Texas to further his goals with this effort and special class.

Middle school wrestler lets boy with cerebral palsy win match

Justin Kievit, a middle-school wrestler from Tennessee, showed off his sportsmanship when he matched up against Jared Stevens, who has cerebral palsy.

The match, which was taped and posted to Facebook by Kievit's father and to YouTube by Stevens' dad, begins with Stevens being gently laid down on the wrestling mat by a coach. Once the match begins, Kievit maneuvers around Stevens in a low crouch. Kievit then gets down on the mat and slides underneath Stevens so Stevens can pin him. The crowd went wild for Stevens' win and Kievit's heart.

According to Kievit's father, the act wasn't planned. The proud dad remarked to Franklin Home Page: "The first time he met Jared was when he shook hands with him before the match. So it really was spontaneous. They just picked this kid. If you watch the video, he just did an amazing job.
